"He Is" - 948kAaron Jeoffrey
"Our mission as Aaron Jeoffrey is not only to project our positive relationship as father and son. But most importantly, to present the person of Christ to everyone who sees us or listens to our music; to be a reflection of his character in our daily lives as well as in our ministry; to always keep in focus that Jesus died for people and people are most important to him; to not only strive for excellence in our music but to touch hearts and lives at their deepest needs; to always exalt the savior and give him the glory because it all begins and ends with Him. When these elements are achieved, then our mission is accomplished."
"One goal is to show a positive parent/child relationship, and hopefully be a role model for fathers and their sons or parents and their children," Aaron adds. "We have taken to heart the last prophetic word of the Old Testament where it says in Malachi 4:6 that 'The fathers' hearts would be turned to their children and the children's' hearts to their fathers, lest I smite them with a curse.' Every social problem that we face today can be traced back to a dysfunctional family life. We [want to address] these problems not only through our songs but by simply being who we are."
Jeoffrey has long been respected for having one of Christian music's most focused and fruitful ministries. A native of Ft. Wayne, Indiana he has actively toured and recorded for years, garnering a reputation as one of the industry's most accomplished singer/songwriters, known for such powerful songs as "Let the Church Rise," and "A Man of God." (He also co-wrote Phillips, Craig & Dean's recent number one hit "The Concert of the Age.")
Aaron, who had left his mark as a National Merit Scholar and All-State Basketball player in high school, decided to pursue a college degree before getting involved in music on a professional level. While finishing up his studies at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, on a soccer, music, and academic scholarship, Aaron continued to write music and practice his vocal skills.
When Aaron expressed an interest in following his father's footsteps Jeoffrey was impressed by his son's motivation. "I am really proud of him because he didn't say we can do a record or we're going to travel, etc." Jeoffrey relates. "He said, 'I am really convinced that God can use us to touch people's lives,' and I said to him, 'that's the call of God'."
Father and son went into the studio and started working on their debut album... the result is a collection of songs that are both scripturally based and songs of growth from personal experience. One of the most powerful cuts is a song called "He Is" on which Jeoffrey sings lead. The song, which he co-wrote with Jeff Silvey, describes Christ in each book of the Bible. "Years ago I heard a pastor share a sermon in which he pointed to Christ in every book of the Bible-- and I thought that would be a great idea for a song.
"We needed a big church anthem to close our concert with, to leave the people with the person of Christ. So we went after different movements to the song. It moves through the prophecies of the Old Testament on to the New Testament."
Produced by Jeff Silvey, Billy Simon and veteran Brian Tankersley, Aaron and his dad equally share lead vocals on the album. The father/son vocal blend infusing each cut with an added warmth and conviction. "Walk on Your Knees" is an uplifting tune of faith. The Dottie Rambo classic "I Go to the Rock" is wonderfully revived by Aaron Jeoffrey along with a special appearance by their DC Talk friends, Toby, Michael and Kevin.
One of the songs that Aaron and Jeoffrey believe to be a cornerstone of the record is "Promise Me," a song Jeoffrey co-wrote with Aaron and songwriter Guy Zabka. "It is a power ballad, but the lyric is very intimate," Jeoffrey says. "It is really the heart of the record." Radio friendly "One Million Reasons," which is scheduled to release as the album's first single, showcases Aaron's vocal abilities as well as his writing talents.
Another song that holds a special place in both their hearts is "Some Kind of Lady," which Jeoffrey wrote about Candice, his wife of 22 years and Aaron's mother. "One of the greatest things in my life that I can testify to happened when I was the tender age of six years old," recalls Aaron. "My dad started traveling full-time in the ministry, so it was mom and I at home a lot of the time. One day I came home from church and started asking mom questions... and she led me to Jesus right there! I am so thankful that it was my mom and nobody else because I can really sing this song with authority and meaning."
Jeoffrey and Candice have two other children, Sareece and Colin. The Lord, their family and their music are the ties that bind Aaron Jeoffrey. These are the things that fuel their creative fires and sustain them in their daily walk, and these are the blessings they want to share in their musical ministry. "Jesus died for people, and people are what matter most to Him," Aaron says. "We get our fulfillment out of sharing the person of Christ."
Jeoffrey echoes his son's sentiments. "It is extremely exciting to see the healing that the ministry has brought to people. That is the sole reason why we do what we do. The records are a fringe benefit, but to see people affected and lives changed--that's the bottom line."
