Smartphone sales continued to hum along in the third quarter, with worldwide shipments up 4.2% in the period compared to a year ago, according to new data from technology research firm IDC. The total of 43.3 million smartphones, which IDC calls "converged devices," also increased 3.2% from the 41.9 million in the second quarter.
